The codification of emotions began in the middle of the 19th century with the work of the French physiologist Duchenne de Boulogne who created (published?) a great series of photographic charts with people (portraits) exhibiting different expressions. The display of emotions was simulated by touching their faces with electrodes that caused muscular contractions.
